The Bundesverband Flachglas (BF) – the Federal Flat Glass Association – was created in 1987 by the fusion of the following German associations: Bundesverband des Deutschen Flachglas-Großhandels, Bundesverband der Deutschen Isolierglashersteller, and Fachverband Flachglas Veredelnde Industrie. Today, the BF has more than 110 member companies with over 220 production facilities, and in addition to those companies some 50 supporting members. Its headquarters is in Troisdorf, in the Cologne/Bonn region. The three pillars of the association's work are standardization and technology; political representation of interests and public relations and marketing.
The BF represents the interests of its members in national and international standardization committees and initiates research projects. On a political level, the BF attends, for example, the regulation of energy saving, advocates for the use of solar energy and natural daylight and engages in various initiatives, especially for the energetic restoration of the building stock.
The association closely cooperates with befriended associations and undertakes all the tasks for which its member companies have no capacity.
The Gütegmeinschaft Flachglas (GGF) - the Flat Glass Quality Association - which is associated with the BF, awards qualified member companies with the RAL quality label for Mehrscheiben-Isolierglas (MIG) - insulated glazing - as well as the RAL quality label for heissgelagertes Einscheiben-Sicherheitsglas (ESG-HF) - heat-soaked single-pane safety glass. Neutral, external monitoring of the production by approved testing institutes that are assigned by the GGF guarantees the particular quality of the products of the over 100 members.
