The story of ClearShield^® began in 1981, when Stephen and Karen Byers investigated the market potential for glass surface treatments and subsequently acquired rights to new technology. Extensive research and improvements to the original formula followed, and the technology was branded ClearShield^®. After several years of successful experience under harsh marine conditions, ClearShield^® was introduced for use on glass in commercial and industrial buildings.

In 1987 Ritec International Limited was formed, and since that time, the company has developed the market for glass surface protection in the flat glass industry. Ritec's commitment to product development and innovation has seen the introduction of specialist formulations of ClearShield^® for different types of glass, applied either in the factory onto new glass or on-site to glass already installed.

Ritec's ClearShield Glass has gained wide recognition and acceptance in the processing of glass as the industry and end-users of glass have become increasingly aware of the need to protect glass so that it keeps its promise of clarity, visibility and cleanliness over time.

Today, hundreds of glass processors and  fabricators worldwide enjoy the benefits of the ClearShield Eco-System™ in a wide range of applications, including architectural, decorative, shower, marine and residential glass. Its performance is well recognised by the industry worldwide with proven results based not only on laboratory tests but, more importantly, on many years of experience.

In June 2013, Ritec introduced the next step in ClearShield's evolution: the world's first and only system for producing multi-functional 'supergreen' glass, ClearShield Eco-Glass™.
 

New ClearShield Eco-Glass™ is ‘energy-saving’ – the first technology reducing by 50% on average the energy requirements for routine washing of exterior glass in buildings - including manpower, operation and maintenance of vehicles and access equipment as well as consumption of water, cleaning chemicals and other materials. This also reduces costs and carbon emissions.

New ClearShield Eco-Glass™ is ‘light-enhancing’ – the first technology maintaining the original light transmission of architectural glass – for enhanced appearance, day-lighting and well-being of building occupants for higher productivity.

New ClearShield Eco-Glass™ is ‘anti-microbial’ – the first transparent, re-treatable glass surface treatment proven to resist the adhesion and growth of bacteria, viruses and fungi, also meeting test requirements of the EU and the USA Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for direct food contact.

Because of the worldwide demand for surface protection technologies, Ritec has an extensive network of subsidiaries and marketing partners offering the extensive range of Ritec products as well as local support to many countries.

Ritec's expertise has allowed the company to develop technologies for the renovation, protection and maintenance of other surfaces. The Ritecoat System™, for example, was developed for the renovation, protection and maintenance of metals and powder coat surfaces, while the VoltShield System™ was designed to renovate and protect ceramic electrical insulators.
