Gas pressure springs are used to balance weight and thus work against the weight force of a cover. When a cover is opened, the manual force is thus supported by the gas spring. A gas strut is an enclosed, maintenance-free element. It consists of a pressure tube and a piston rod with piston. In addition, a seal to prevent possible loss of gas is fitted at the piston rod guide. The gas spring is filled with compressed gas – nitrogen – which provides the spring force. To cushion the end position and to lubricate the gas springs, it also contains a small quantity of hydraulic oil. The amount of oil influences the gas spring's internal pressure. This pressure is exerted on the cross-sectional area of the piston rod, which creates the extension force of the gas spring. In the unpressurised state, the piston rod is always extended. Pushing in the piston rod reduces the volume in the cylinder and the gas is compressed. This causes an increase in force (progression) for the gas spring, which depends on the diameter of the piston rod and the volume of the cylinder.

Tension springs work in the reverse way to compression springs, meaning that the gas pressure in the cylinder pulls the piston rod inwards. When an opening is closed, the tension spring thus supports the manual force. A tension spring is an enclosed, maintenance-free element. It consists of a pressure tube and a piston rod with piston. In addition, a seal to prevent possible loss of gas is fitted at the piston rod guide. The tension spring is fitted with compressed gas – nitrogen – which provides the spring force. In the unpressurised state, the piston rod is always retracted. Pulling out the piston rod reduces the volume in the cylinder and the gas is compressed. This creates an increase in force (progression) for the spring, which depends on the diameter of the piston rod and the volume of the cylinder. The piston has a small opening (nozzle), through which the gas can flow, thus allowing the piston rod to move at a defined speed. The cross-section (diameter) of this opening defines the degree of damping of a spring.
Applications of tension springs:
Tension gas springs are used in any situation in which normal gas compression springs cannot be used for space reasons. They support manual force when opening covers which have to be pulled upward to open them. This option is found, for example, in the escape hatches of lifts. In addition, tension springs are used if covers have to be held up while open, as is the case, for example, with desks with a lifting work surface.

The type of locking for our HAHN gas springs can be calculated precisely to your individual requirements and coordinated during manufacture.
Operating the release opens the piston valve of the gas struts. When considering the elastic locking gas spring, it is nitrogen that flows through the piston, whereas in the rigid locking springs, it is oil that flows through it.
The flowing gas / oil moves the piston rod out by itself and in by pressure. When releasing the trigger, the valve in the inside is automatically being closed and stops the piston rod in any desired position.

Layout and function of HAHN double-stroke gas springs
HAHN double-stroke gas springs have been developed to meet customer-specific requirements when solutions are needed for heavy hatches with a large opening angle. The challenge here is to produce a low start force and a high end force.
The double-stroke gas spring consists of two differently filled pressure tubes, which means that they can cover two different force ranges.
Moving the piston rod in creates a jumping progression that can be adapted very well to the force requirement of the hatch. We as manufacturer of the HAHN double-stroke gas springs, can precisely calculate the force ranges, tune them to each other exactly and thus adapt them to the type of movement requirement.
Generally most construction needs can be met by our standard products. We can deliver any force and length of gas spring from our standard product series direct from our warehouse or within a short production time. For special requirements our specialists work on a solution together with the customer to create new dimensions for their products. The telescopic spring from HAHN Gasfedern is a good example of this.
